“Don’t isolate yourself and have a big footprint.” ~Phil Coleman http://twitter.com/trekke http://philstechblog.com/
This quote is very unique and a guaranteed original. I work with Phil, a seasoned IT leader, and I asked him if he had any insightful words that I could use for my quote of the day. He immediately responded saying, “don’t isolate yourself and have a big footprint.” Let’s think about that statement for a moment.
No matter what career field you’re in and regardless of how skilled you might be at your given profession, isolating yourself within your area of expertise is a recipe for disaster. Always strive to posture yourself in a way that your “big footprint” reveals your commitment to the business, executive leadership, your co-workers, and everyone else in between.
Remember, if people don’t see you or the results of your work as valuable, they’ll soon question why you’re there. But how do you do this?
I believe that the road to value is paved with only a few simple steps.
1. Use the mission, goals, and objectives of the business as a compass
2. Next, instead of working to be a roadblock to the business, align behind the vision of the compass and commit its destination
3. Then, as you go about your work always take time to step back and validate that you’re still on the right path
4. Always work well with others and keep your eyes focused toward the goal
5. Last but not least, always anticipate that the goals of the business can, and often will change mid-journey. Don’t ever take this personally, it’s just business. Reassess and move forward.
What are you doing to add value today?
